Meredith DeMent is a seasoned international trade lawyer with extensive experience counseling U.S. and multinational companies across industry sectors on all facets of customs law. Her practice focuses, in particular, on strategic business planning that enables companies to adapt to rapidly evolving trade policy and customs enforcement.
Meredith has a successful track record representing clients in customs matters, including customs investigations, seizures and forfeitures, detentions, and audits. She is adept at advising on strategic customs planning and compliance matters, including those involving customs valuation, country-of-origin, “Made in USA” claims, tariff classification, free trade agreement preference claims, other duty preference programs, and forced labor under Section 307 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). She has mitigated the impact of numerous tariff actions similar to the recently announced “reciprocal tariffs” under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, and Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, obtaining exclusions and utilizing other duty-mitigating customs mechanisms on behalf of her clients.
Meredith routinely represents clients in customs matters before U.S. Customs and Border Protection and has represented clients before the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in trade remedies and customs cases. Meredith also advises clients on international trade due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions and the design, implementation and administration of effective compliance programs.
Prior to joining Mowry & Grimson, Ms. DeMent worked in private practice at two global Am Law 100 firms and an international trade boutique firm.
